Conversation Starters

We long for and crave authentic conversation, but sometimes they can feel a bit intimidating to initiate. Here are some helpful conversation starters.

Media

One of the best ways to get a conversation rolling, is to start with a video, image or interesting article; a shared experience for everyone to come together around and talk about. Here are some of our favorite videos and articles:

Questions

Thoughtful questions contain immense power; the power to communicate love, the power to create a safe place for people to express their genuine selves, the power to invite self-reflection and vulnerability, and the power to extend grace.

  • When do you feel most beautiful?
  • What was the first time that you felt acutely aware of your body?
  • What have you always told yourself that you would do if you were a different size?
  • What's stopping you from doing that thing?
  • What would you wear if you could wear anything at all?
  • What has been that most wonderful compliment you have received?
  • Who has been your greatest role model?
  • What have they taught you about life?
  • What brings you delight?
  • When was the last time you laughed until you cried?
  • What is one thing you wish that you could do every day?
  • What is the best thing your family taught you about beauty? What is the hardest thing?
  • What do you hope for your children in their relationships with their own bodies?
  • What in your life, makes you feel like you are truly known an truly loved?

Tips for Hosting

Hosting is not about impressing people with the perfect color palate or having a fridge stocked to the nines and a 4 course meal out in perfect time while looking superb and quite like you haven't been cooking all day at all.

Hosting is about gathering people together, to share an experience, to laugh and love and explore life in community. Hosting is about opening our imperfectly perfect lives and saying to all who enter, "you are welcome here."

Creating Safe Space

  • Creating space that feels safe and authentic invites vulnerable conversation.
  • Let a space be free from judgement. This begins with our own words and the manor in which we react to what people say.
  • The truth is that people rarely want advice. What they usually want is for someone to listen to them. If you are the listener, if you feel the urge to speak, count to five before you begin. Odds are the person you are listening to, will have something more to say.
  • Honor the sensitivity of what is being shared, by reminding people that what is shared in these circles is not going to be gossiped about.
  • Remember to have fun. Sometimes these questions can lead to hard and emotional conversations. Sit back, and enjoy time and sweet conversation with your friends.
